Firsts in Timișoara
The First City in Romania with a Brewery
After Timișoara was liberated from Ottoman occupation in 1716, the first brewery in present-day Romania was established.
The First City in Romania Free of Communism
In December 1989, Timișoara was the first city in Romania to shout “Freedom!” Through the courage of hundreds of thousands of people who took over the streets to overthrow the communist dictatorship, Timișoara became the first city in the country free of communism on December 20, 1989.
The First European City with Fully Electric Street Lighting
On November 12, 1884, Timișoara inaugurated a fully electric street lighting system. It consisted of a 59-kilometer network of cables powering 731 incandescent carbon filament lamps. The lighting system was built in less than two years by the Anglo-Austrian Brush Electrical Company, based in Vienna.
The First European City with a Tram
The horse-drawn tram was inaugurated in 1869, making Timișoara the first city in Europe to have this mode of transportation.
The First Machine for Welding Railway and Tram Rails
In 1938, Professor Corneliu Mikloși invented the machine for welding train and tram rails, a first not only in Europe but also worldwide. His invention, called Taurus, revolutionized public transportation and opened new paths in the railway industry.
The First City with an Ambulance Station in Romania and Hungary
The first rescue station in the Austro-Hungarian Empire was established in Vienna in 1884. Just two years later, in 1886, the “Salvarea” Society was founded in Timișoara, making it the first city in Romania and Hungary to offer emergency medical aid. It would take another 20 years for a similar service to be established in Bucharest.
The First European City with Three State Theaters in Three Different Languages
In 1953, Timișoara became the only European city with three state theaters, with the establishment of the German State Theatre and the Hungarian section, which would later become an independent institution. This milestone reflects the multicultural spirit that has always defined the city, being one of its greatest strengths.
